Depart from Reykjavik Domestic Airport for a flight to the charming Arctic village of Ilulissat, beautifully situated at the mouth of the 56 kilometre-long Ilulissat Icefjord. On arrival, you will be transferred to your accommodation for the next four nights.
Get to know Ilulissat and its people with a guided culture walk! Your guide will tell you all about the history of this town and introduce you to the native Greenlandic culture and daily life of the local inhabitants. The tour also includes a visit to local fishermen and hunters at the “Brædtet” trading post by the harbour as well as a stop to the birthplace of the famous explorer Knud Rasmussen. Included activities: Guided cultural and historical city walk (2 hours)
Today is your chance to experience the traditional mode of transportation in the Arctic! Led by an experienced local musher, you will enjoy a 5-hour dog-sledding tour to a small hunting cabin in Aallaniarfik, situated about 15 kilometres from Ilulissat at the edge of the beautiful Icefjord. On the journey to the cabin, the trail weaves through rugged, hilly terrain so you will get a good feeling for the dogs’ sled-pulling skills. On return to Ilulissat, you can enjoy the rest of the day as you wish. Included activities: Dog-sledding tour (5 hours)
This day is completely up to you. You can explore the town at your leisure or choose from a variety of optional day tours in the area, including helicopter rides over the mighty ice cap and motorboat tours among the maze of icebergs off the coast. Or if you’re a hiking enthusiast, the Sermermiut Valley just a few kilometres from Ilulissat offers spectacular viewpoints from a number of marked trails that you can explore at your own pace. Note: We recommend booking any optional activities in advance with your travel consultant at Nordic Visitor, although you are also welcome to book them at your hotel in Ilulissat after arrival. Please also keep in mind that the northern lights are a natural phenomenon, so sightings cannot be guaranteed.
After some last-minute souvenir shopping or exploring the town, it’s time to say goodbye to this land of adventure. Transportation will be provided to the Ilulissat airstrip for your return flight to Iceland. Note: This tour can be customized to fly from Copenhagen (Denmark) instead of Reykjavik (Iceland), with arrivals available from Monday to Saturday. Contact us for details.
